On April 25, 2017, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) held its annual Design Day, highlighting “What’s Next” as a theme and hosting a session in its Midwest Regional Office in Detroit, Michigan. The topic of Design Day included lively and thought-provoking discussion about all aspects of design patents, from conception through enforcement. Fishman Stewart Partner Michael Stewart participated in a live panel discussion with Kelly K. Burris of Burris Law, PLLC and Vincenzo Iavicoli, Chair & Professor of Product Design at College for Creative Studies. The panel discussed the evolution of a product design, the basic forms of intellectual property for protecting product designs, and the formal requirements for design patent application drawings at the USPTO.
