Fishman Stewart awards $1,000 scholarship to winner of Engineering Society of Detroit’s student writing contest at ESD Gold Award Reception

Troy, Mich.— April 21, 2026—Intellectual property law firm Fishman Stewart PLLC is pleased to announce that Hamad Sheer, a recent Lawrence Technological University graduate in computer engineering, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for his winning essay as part of Fishman Stewart’s sponsorship of The Engineering Society of Detroit’s (ESD) annual Engineering Student Writing Contest. Partner Michael Stewart, an active ESD member, presented the award to Sheer on March 18, 2026, at ESD’s Gold Award Reception & Recognition.

ESD’s annual writing contest is open to all engineering students who attend Michigan universities and are studying within any of the engineering and related disciplines. A variety of topics are offered for participants and the top three essays are chosen by the editorial board of ESD’s TechCentury Magazine.  

Sheer wrote on the microprocessor revolution, addressing the prompt, “Select an emerging technology from a past era (20+ years ago) and explain how it paved the way for progress in today’s engineering landscape.” The two runner-up honorees, Cordelia Sorrelle, a biomedical engineering student at the University of Michigan, and Jamie Hung, an electrical engineering student at the University of Michigan, both wrote their essays on the topic, “Mentorship, Motivation and the Future of STEAM. All three essays can be read here, pages 14-16, in the most recent issue of  TechCentury Magazine.

ESD’s annual writing contest is open to all engineering students who attend Michigan universities and are studying within any of the engineering and related disciplines. The top three essays are chosen by the editorial board of ESD’s TechCentury Magazine, and the first-place essayist is formally recognized and awarded the scholarship at the Gold Award Reception.
