Troy, Mich.— February 27, 2024—Michael Stewart, managing partner of intellectual property specialty law firm Fishman Stewart PLLC, is saddened to announce the sudden passing of attorney John Posa, who was of counsel to the firm. John died on February 25 after a brief illness at his winter home in Savannah, Georgia, and is survived by his wife Oksana Posa and son Benjamin Posa.

While John had only been with the firm since 2023, he shared a career-long friendship with Fishman Stewart partner Julie A. Greenberg, who worked with him at the former Gifford Krass law firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for more than 30 years. Greenberg was instrumental in bringing John, who specialized in engineering and electronics patent claims, to Fishman Stewart. She joins his colleagues and friends in mourning his loss.

“John was beloved by his clients, many of whom he shared a close friendship with,” Greenberg said. “His artistic genius, together with his scientific prowess, drew him to all types. Despite having his eye on retirement, John’s clients could not let him go. I was thrilled he decided to join me at Fishman Stewart, and was so eager to work with him again. He will be dearly missed by his many colleagues and friends.”

Originally planning to pursue a career in art, John held a BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art. He then earned a B.S. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Michigan. At the urging of his lifetime mentor and close friend, attorney Allen Krass of Gifford Krass, John earned a Juris Doctor from Lewis & Clark Law School and joined Krass in his patent law practice.

John spent the majority of his legal career living and working in Ann Arbor. In recent years, he split his time between Charlevoix, Michigan, and Savannah, Georgia. Immediately prior to joining Fishman Stewart, John spent several years with Savannah-based Belzer PC as a patent attorney.

A memorial service is being planned.
