Call for submissions announced for Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) student writing contest, sponsored by Fishman Stewart

Troy, Mich.—June 28, 2023—As a longstanding sponsor of The Engineering Society of Detroit’s (ESD) annual TechCentury Student Writing Contest, intellectual property law firm Fishman Stewart PLLC is pleased to announce that the 2023 contest is now open for submissions. All students attending Michigan universities and studying within any of the engineering disciplines or related fields are eligible to participate. The top three entries will be published in the January 2024 issue of the ESD’s TechCentury magazine. The top award-winning essay author will receive recognition at the 2024 Gold Award Reception and a $1,000 scholarship. Details follow:

ESD 2023 TechCentury Student Writing Contest

  1. The student will write a 750-word essay on one of four topics.
  2. The student must be studying an engineering or related discipline at an accredited Michigan university.
  3. Entries must be received by the close of business, Friday, December 1, 2023.
  4. The TechCentury Editorial Board will review entries and the top three essays (along with a student profile) will be published in the Winter 2024 issue of TechCentury, both print and online.
  5. The top essayist will be recognized at the 2024 ESD Gold Award Reception as well as receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Essay contest topics:

  1. How do you feel AI can be used effectively in engineering and what are the downsides? 
  2. CHATGPT – We posed this question to CHATGPT: What is the most important engineering feat of all time? CHAT answered like this. How would you answer it in your own words?
  3. How did emerging technologies from prior eras make progress for today? What was the technology and what impact did it make?
  4. Climate change— What do you envision engineering can do to assist with ‘engineering for net zero’ and how can youcontribute to the solution?

The contest entry and submission forms and additional details can be found on the ESD website. Completed entry form and essay (in a Microsoft Word document) must be sent by Friday, December 1, 2023, to Susan Thwing, sthwing@esd.org.  Essays must be accompanied by the entry form.

Fishman Stewart awarded Oakland University engineering student Olivia Racette a $1,000 scholarship for her winning essay in the 2022 contest.  Managing Partner Michael Stewart said the firm encourages and supports the development of strong writing skills.
