매년 7월 4일은 미국의 독립기념일로, 미국인들은 이날을 화려한 불꽃놀이와 야외 바비큐 파티로 즐깁니다. 이러한 전통은 오랜 역사를 가지고 있지만, 그 이면에는 특허로 보호되는 현대적인 혁신이 숨겨져 있습니다.

또한, 여름 밤하늘을 수놓는 스파클러(불꽃 막대) 역시 독립기념일의 필수 요소입니다. 약 90년 전, 이 기술은 특허 US2063601A로 시작되었습니다. 더욱 강렬한 경험을 원하는 사람들을 위해, 특허 US6718882B1은 기존 스파클러의 빛나는 시간과 색상을 두 배로 늘려주는 양방향 스파클러 형태를 제공합니다.
뒤뜰에서 즐기는 바비큐 파티에 필수적인 바비큐 그릴은 1897년 엘스워스 B.A. 조이어가 처음으로 숯 연료 설계를 특허받으면서 시작되었습니다 (특허 USD27483S). 반세기 후, 초기 버전의 웨버 그릴이 시장에 등장하며 큰 인기를 끌었습니다 (특허 US3330266A).

The U.S. Copyright Office (USCO) recently published its latest report on AI and “copyrightability.” In short, the USCO considers only some AI-generated works to be sufficiently creative as to deserve copyright protection, and thus, registration.

This holiday season, many will hope it’s a white out, a classic white Christmas, as they unwrap gifts of licensed collegiate apparel. While thanking the givers of those gifts is probably the right thing to do, I’d say thank the White Out.
